how to motivate yourself to work out

hey guys! today I wanted to share some ways to motivate yourself to exercise because it’s not always easy but there are so many benefits! pushing yourself even when it’s hard might not be easy or fun, but in the long run, you’ll be so glad you did.

a few benefits that I’ve experienced from consistently workout out are:

a healthier body (obviously, lol!)

better sleep

faster metabolism

and there are so many more!

remember your why

in the middle of your workout you might not feel super motivated or remember why you started, but thinking about your why and the benefits you’ll get is so motivating! Print out pictures that help you remember why you started or journal about what you hope to get out of your exercise routine.

make it part of your routine

Find a set part of your day for exercise. It doesn’t have to be in the early morning (I don’t like waking up at 5 am either!), just make it part of your daily routine and keep it consistent. If you’re always working out at different times of the day, it won’t feel natural or part of your daily rythym.

play some hype music

I know people that like to listen to sermons or podcasts while they work out, but I don’t get it! If that motivates you then go for it, but for me, some hype music gets it done. Make a playlist that matches the length of your workout and fill it with songs you’ll never want to skip.

wear a cute and comfy outfit

if you’re wearing ratty sweats and a too small sports bra, working out won’t be fun or easy! get a cute new sports bra and some soft, comfy leggings in a color you love (lululemon has some awesome options!) and trust me, you’ll feel so much more motivated.

take it easy

listen to your body. if your body is telling you it’s too much or to slow down, listen! if you don’t you could get injured which wouldn’t help your workout routine. if you’re not feeling great or notice things in your body that concern you, make note of them and talk to a parent, friend, or doctor.

do it with a friend

working out is so much easier if you have a friend to do it with you and keep you accountable. it’s a lot more fun too! find a friend to work out with you and meet up at a local trail to jog or at a gym to lift weights.

mix it up

doing the same workout every day is boring and repetitive – don’t do that! mix your routine up by doing different activites or workouts each day to keep things fun and interesting. try jogging one day, a workout video by chloe ting or MadFit the next, and swimming or tennis the third!

join a workout class

joining a workout class full of other people who have the same goals as you is super motivating and will help you accomplish your goals. plus you have to show up so you can’t skip the workout.

do something you enjoy

if you hate running – don’t do it!  if you love soccer, volleyball, or ab workouts (I don’t know who would love those though haha) then do those! exercise doesn’t have to be awful and boring! sports count too, so shoot those hoops in your driveway.

start slow

don’t feel like you have to be like the girl on instagram who does an hour full body workout daily. if you’re just starting out, take it slow and don’t push yourself! try walking around the block or a ten minute low impact workout on youtube, you’ll feel so much better and you’ll actually enjoy it!

do you exercise? do you use these ideas to help you?

  1. These are definitely wonderful tips Christina! I work out quite a bit doing strength training and all kinds of things, and so I know how hard it can get without the right motivation! Incorporating exercise into my morning routine, playing hype music, doing it with others, and remembering my “why” are my top favorite ways out of what you suggested to be motivated! Thanks so much for sharing 😊

  2. Such great tips!! Yes I love the comfy clothes idea, my go to workout clothes are a hoodie and leggings! Great idea for putting it in the routine I’m gonna work out every morning now! Thanks for inspiring me! 💗

  3. I needed this post because recently I’ve had no motivation which, is quite unlike me. Before lockdown, I worked out everyday either in dance class or a school sport but obviously I can’t do either right now. It’s hard to maintain the same amount of physical activity I did before and the last week I had had to drove myself to work out. Thanks again for these posts and I will try theses ideas. I think the switching it up is very important😂!

  4. “I know people that like to listen to sermons or podcasts while they work out, but I don’t get it!” “or ab workouts (I don’t know who would love those though haha)” and I oop this is actually meee. 😂😂 My problem is that I get too motivated sometimes, throw on cute floral leggings and a workout top and I just go OFF with high intensity workouts. And then the next day my muscles are DONE. Like I’m in pain in every position. 😂 You’re so right about listening to your body because I don’t think my body enjoys the no workout and then high intensity workout and then no workout again. I will definitely keep these in mind, take it slow, and keep my goal in mind. Amazing post!! ❤
